Men's Doubles Tournament

In glorious sunshine, Joe Chadwick and Neil Blincow comprehensively won the Bridport Men's Doubles title, defeating Ludo Blackburn and George Skellern in the final.

The day started with 7 pairs playing a two-box round robin, with the top two pairs in each box contesting the semi-finals. There was also a plate round robin knockout that Scott Carson and Neil Melvin won. Playing some lovely attacking tennis, they defeated Alan Cash and Nathan Glyde, Jon Wales and Adam Beales who all contributed some fantastic doubles play throughout the day, making it a very competitive tournament.

The first semi-final was Jerry Allen and Arran Hall vs Neil Blincow and Joe Chadwick. Hall and Allen put up some tough resistance especially on the serve and volley, but Chadwick and Blincow came through 6 - 2 playing attacking, consistent tennis.

The 2nd semi-final was Ludo Blackburn and George Skellern vs Simon Wood and Steve Piper. This was a tough dogfight with very close games, and at times the match could have swung either way. In the end Blackburn and Skellern came through 6 - 4.

So the final was between the 2012 doubles champions, Blackburn and Skellern, against the new tournament doubles pairing, Chadwick and Blincow. The first game was crucial as Blackburn looked to bang down some huge serves. It was close but Chadwick and Blincow broke serve, setting the scene for the rest of the match. Playing consistent, attacking tennis, Blincow and Chadwick saved their best match for the final, defeating Skellern and Blackburn 6 - 0.

Thanks to every team for making it a successful day. Great tennis was played by all and we look forward to the tournament again next year.

Men's Singles Tournament

The weather was glorious for our Men’s singles tournament on Sunday 11th September, with perfect conditions for playing tennis.

Ludo Blackburn reclaimed the title with a tough win against Joe Chadwick, last year’s champion. The tournament started with two round robin boxes totalling 7 players. Scott Carson put up strong resistance in a tough group, showing how much he has improved in the last year. Julian Jones’s speed around the court was exceptional and he recorded wins against Gerry Dudgeon and Carson. Dudgeon played some lovely tennis with deft angles and spin, competing well in his group.

The top two players in each group contested the semi-finals which consisted of one set each. George Skellern lost 6 - 1 to Blackburn in their semi while Chadwick beat a battling Neil Blincow 6 - 1 in their match. The final was contested over 1 set and Chadwick started strongly, breaking serve and dominating on his serve to take a 4 - 2 lead. There were some great points, and Blackburn was looking for the break of serve, which happened in the 7th game. Blackburn started to dominate with his forehand, taking control of the points and forcing Chadwick to hit short balls. With the score at 5 - 4 to Blackburn, Chadwick saved 5 match points on his serve before a wide forehand handed Blackburn the victory.

Thanks to everyone for making it a great day and to Gerry Dudgeon for cooking up some lovely burgers on the BBQ. We all look forward to the upcoming Men's doubles tournament on Sunday 25th September.
